Made in America
My first Godard experience. If I wanted to be trite, this post would read "It's French."
The movie deserves a little more than that. Many elements remind me of more contemporary filmmakers' work, most obviously David Lynch. Godard and Lynch definitely have distinct, unique styles. Made is playful and often comedic. Lynch's work prefers dark and ominous. The most notable similarity between the two is the Mr. Typhus character. He looks strange, yells for no reason, and has a generally strange delivery of his lines. Reminds me of the dwarf in Twin Peaks.
There are only two things I can really say about Made. First, it's existential. Second, Godard purposefully breaks the tenets of narrative. Luckily he just breaks the spatial barriers, not time. The essence of a plot exists, but confusing philosophical commentary drowns it. It's not meant for a wide audience.
