A very strange movie. Not particularly good, but oddly entertaining. Plot is by the numbers and it's longer than it needs to be. Good cast, fun, and modern music saves it.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil
Anvil: The Story of Anvil is a documentary about the band Anvil, a metal band who peaked in the early 80s when they played a festival with Metallica and some other famous bands. They've kept playing and putting out albums since, but have little to show for their dedication to metal. The lead singer, Lips, works delivering food to schools. It is not glamorous. The movie follows the band on a poorly planned tour through Eastern Europe and their quest to record their 13th album with a legitimate producer. At the beginning of the movie, there's a heavy Spinal Tap vibe. It's a metal band no one knows of with over-the-top metal songs. For a good 15 minutes I'm thinking this band is fake. Only problem is that these guys are too self-aware for this to be a mockumentary. They know they aren't famous or rich. They are living the reality of not making it but never giving up, which is why it's a compelling watch. In many ways Anvil is a stereotypical band. Lips is egomaniacal and emotional, standard of a front man. Surprisingly missing is the lead guitarist to create tension. The drummer stands in, being Lips' friend since childhood, and occasionally bristles when Lips yells one too many times. Btw, the drummer's name is Robb Reiner. Are we sure this band is real?. Regardless, these guys are awesome. Not a huge fan of the director's work. There are a couple of scenes that seem like cheesy news-mag moments. The two that stick out are when Anvil goes to Stonehenge and the end, when they are back in Tokyo. There is one redeeming quality of the final scene, though. Right before the credits roll, Lips points off camera and says "Godzilla!" I chuckled. First Viewing: 1+2+2+2+3 = 10 |
