Friday the 13th
I don't claim to be an expert on Jason, or horror in general, but I've seen some things. My immediate response to this reboot is heavily influenced by my mood at the time, but it freaked me out. For once a Michael Bay production did its job correctly.
This version is an amalgamation of the first 4 movies. They use a short sequence to sum up the original first film, which is good because Jason isn't in the original. And we're all here for Jason. Then we get a 20-30 minute sequence of the first unfortunate campers to stumble across Camp Crystal Lake. These two sequences combine for an awesomely intense intro. The best opening I've seen since Scream.
After the opener, the intensity ratchets down, with Jason choosing to scare his victims and allow them a few seconds to realize they are about to die. He still treats us to bloody, violent kills, but he's more open about it. He's out of the closet, so to speak, and savoring his work.
Unfortunately, in keeping with the genre, Friday the 13th disappoints in the end. I'm not saying most of the movie holds up under scrutiny, but the final scene is just preposterous. Maybe I'm exaggerating. Maybe everyone goes out of their way to carry the dead body of a mass murderer down to the lake when the think he's dead, then drop it in the lake. I guess leaving the body where it is and calling the police is too "logical".
Plot aside, the quality is incredible. Great production. The characters are one-dimensional, as expected, but their dialogue isn't unbelievable. Acting is blah. Nudity and gore factors are very high. If you can tolerate horror, check it out.
