Baby Mama
Tina Fey's first starring role is a little disappointing. My expectations were relatively high. The reviews I read when the film was released were mostly positive. It's not a bad movie, but it's in the same category as Ghost Town. Maybe I should blame Greg Kinnear for that.
Baby Mama starts out well and Fey is good in her role. I'm not a big Amy Poehler fan, but she didn't bother me too much. She manages to look much younger than Fey, which is impressive. I like seeing Romany get more film roles. Loved him in 40 YO Virgin and he deserves more work. They really pull out the big guns with the remaining cast, getting Steve Martin and Sigourney Weaver in small roles. They both play their parts well. And who could forget Dax? Me.
There's not much remarkable to the story. We get Fey's motivation, but that's really the only fleshed out character. The story starts well enough, but as is the standard problem of lackluster movies, it falls apart towards the end. The court room scene is particularly silly. Any time a character gets to monologue an apology like that takes me out of the movie. No one ever does these speeches in reality. I can't even pretend that it's realistic. The reconciliation is lackluster, as usual. And the ending is too obvious.
So far, I like Tina Fey's work across all platforms. I'm still perplexed by her face though. I know she has the scar, but I feel like that's not it. She's pretty, but there's something not quite right, something keeping her from beautiful. It's the strangest thing to me. Just when I'm about to understand it, my eyes slide away.
