Gotta be honest, I'm way behind on my reviews and the details of some of the movies I've seen recently are fading fast. This will lead to short reviews. More specifically, this will be a short review. However, that may reflect my love of the movie, as I continually find it difficult to discuss at length a movie I love. It is far easier to me to complain at length about things that don't make sense.
Safety Not Guaranteed is a quirky indie movie about a journalist (the bartender dude from The New Girl) and two interns (one of which is Aubrey Plaza, the main character) research a personal ad looking for a partner to travel back in time. The journalist isn't taking it too seriously, but Aubrey is drawn to the concept. She gets involved with the man who placed the ad (Mark Duplass, who's all over the indie scene this summer). He's very quirky, to say the least, and Aubrey slowly falls in love. Meanwhile, the journalist chases an old high school flame and tries to get the other intern, a shy Indian nerd, laid.
I loved everything. There is one stand out scene for me, when Duplass plays a song he had written (I think it was on a lute) at about the midway point. It is fucking beautiful.
The only problem I have with the movie is Aubrey still trusting Mark after finding out he had lied (or was just mentally disable and blocked out reality). This is set up as a big turning point, but is never discussed or resolved to my satisfaction. Instead it is a brief hiccup in the eventual coming together of the characters.
I need to see this movie again. If this isn't my favorite movie of 2012, it will be an incredible fall and winter for movies.
Almost gave production a 3 because there is pretty solid FX shot. However, the overall look of the movie is not quite as good as I want.
