I could probably take my review of Heat and repost it here, but I'll write something original instead. Maybe.
Spy has Melissa McCarthy as a deck-bound CIA operative helping hot undercover field agent Jude Law protect the US (and the world) from nuclear terrorists. When Jude Law is killed and all CIA field agents are compromised, McCarthy convinces the head of the CIA to send her into the field. Before she goes, we get a nice video of McCarthy in training academy, being a badass. She gets into the field and hilarity ensues. But thankfully the funny isn't her being a bumbling idiot, she leaves that to the other agents.
Feig has been doing great, refreshing things with his female driven comedies. As it turns out, it's not that hard to create a story in which the female lead is strong but flawed and the plot has nothing to do with the sex of the main character.
Enjoy Melissa McCarthy when she's smart, acerbic and mean. She has the best put-downs. Also love some Peter Serafinowicz, wish he got more good work. Unfortunately he mostly gets small roles or ends up in stuff like Couples Retreat.
